Before and After a Pretty Mustard Buffet

This pretty piece came to me as a custom project from the sweetest person. I feel in love with her space and the color options right away! She wanted me to have complete freedom…. Sweet! Since the piece itself was beautiful and her space was a electric bohemian mix, color choice was simple… Mustard! I love this color. Every time I use it, I’m blown away by the perfection in the tone. She took longer than I anticipated, with 4 coats of paint and 3 of the top coat. The coverage is sometimes off putting with milk paint and can be frustrating to work with…but its worth it (most of the time). Here’s the before…

Stay tuned for her (or his?) reveal…it’s gonna be a good one!

A little post about Mike…

I have something so fun to write about today. My dear husband Mike has been busy working on creating all kinds of goodies from marquees to lamps…and now a guitar amp/MP3 players out of old suitcases. For those of you who don’t know him personally let me give you a little back story on this guy. I met Mike almost 10 years ago when he was in a band and he swept me off my feet with his rock music and tattoos. Ha! Yes it was really THAT cheesy. We had that instant bond, we just “got” each other. He’s the sweetest man I know, and incredibly creative. So fast forward a bit…2 dogs, 1 cat, 2 kids and 3 houses later….eek! He found a passion with electricity and went to school for 5 years to become a union commercial wireman. I swear I’m not writing a resume, although it sounds like it…it’s all relevant. For the risk of getting to political I will leave my personal opinion of “the union” out of this post. So, to put it lightly they have the freedom to lay off workers when they run out of work. So…we have learned to adapt to an on and off work schedule, which can be tough in ways I can’t even describe. The number one being our spirit. With this recent lay off we decided as a family, a couple and individuals that we are in control of our own happiness. We would put our efforts into my business and our kiddos. And I must say, its been really fun this time around! I’ve seen my sweet husband so inspired and coming up with some super duper cool creations. I’m in awe of him and his upbeat attitude, drive and support to grow Ferpie and Fray. I’m without words to describe how proud I am of him. I’m one lucky gal. Now…onward to the works that amaze…. Oh and did I say he even created a Facebook page, you can check it out http://www.facebook.com/mikesmarquees. Here’s a little snidbit…

Two new pieces…and a busy week ahead

I’ve been a painting fool today. I feel asleep with my sweet daughter in her room last night around 8pm. I never, ever, ever, go to sleep willingly at that hour. But I couldn’t fight it. So this morning I woke up at 4:30, and had my house clean, myself ready and emails answered by 6. Then I just played on Craigslist and Facebook until my kiddos woke up. We went for a nice walk and then my husband took over for a few hours and I painted like crazy. I sold 3 big pieces this week! Woo hoo! Even the lovely marquee sold in less than 24 hours! My husband is so excited to make more, and I can’t wait to share.  I have so many fun projects in the wings and an even better custom job I’m starting… That will be beautiful! Here’s a couple pieces I finished today. I have a couple more I wasn’t able to grab photos of yet…but soon, I promise. 🙂

Before and After–Driftwood Dresser with Pink knobs

This sweet little dresser was a pretty easy make over. I knew I wanted pink knobs from the moment I bought her, she just seems dainty and I like the wow of these huge knobs. I was just deciding between a neutral. When in doubt Driftwood is always a good choice. I’ve never been disappointed. She’ll be heading to Poppy & Co. Tacoma Friday morning for $468 40L,20D,36T.

Heres a before… (Sorry for the terrible phone photo)

My husband has been creating the coolest things lately, one of them I am so excited to share but it will have to wait until Friday. It will blow your mind… I hope so anyway. It definitely knocks my socks off, so much that I requested a custom one just for staging my furniture. After we put the kiddos to bed last night, I painted and he worked. Its nice having a partner to paint with. I found myself rambling for far to long to admit, when I lifted my head from painting and apologized for explaining how I feel about waxing and poly options. He’s such a good sport. The lamps he has been working on are available now too… $120 for the dimmer in the cord and $130 for it to be a touch anywhere dimmer.

He also makes these sweet baby/dog/ or anywhere gates… image

Ok that’s it for now… 🙂

Before and After— Frenchy Grey Buffet

I’m not usually drawn to frenchy styles. But this one fell into my lap at the right time and I thought, why not? I felt very challenged on how I was going to turn this style into my own. I thought about so many options, she was almost painted a very pretty pastel orange…which I promise is coming soon. But again it always seems to go back to the details for me. I had these knobs and paper to match and I even had a matching milk paint in my stock. The design just fell in place.

…..and here’s the before….

The bottom detail was done with a custom mix of aqua milk paint and sealed with a dark wax. Up close its so pretty, almost like water colors. I think I might start planning a whole piece in this shade, I love it.

Before and After–White Dresser with Casters

So excited to share this one with you. I have to admit, this piece was not love at first sight. Yes, sure…she’s pretty but I just didn’t have an instant design in my mind. I think I’ve had her in my stock for maybe a year? Then I bought these cool knobs…. and my wheels started turning. I wish I would have bought a thousand of these babies. They are so pretty and different! I love different! So here she was before. Blah! image

I used Antique White by General Finishes…I think it’s my favorite “white”. Every time I use it, it makes me want a vanilla milkshake. Seriously…try it. Ok here she is all prettified. image image image image

Here is a little preview to a piece I’m finishing up tomorrow…I was challenged with the next one on how you turn frenchy into funky.

Oh, for the love of paint!

If you are a painter, crafter, artist or anything else creative.. I’m sure without a doubt you hold it dear to your heart. Acceptance, encouragement and even criticism is on the forefront of our minds. As much as we don’t want to let it in, it’s there. And oh man, it can lift you up and then throw you down. Designing a piece of furniture is art to me, even before a business…seriously! I enjoy every minute of the process. I take a lot of time to plan the design of each piece. This process is so important to me that it impairs my ability to make any real money. And that’s ok (I hope)! I set out knowing design over a dollar is what mattered most. When a customer buys a piece from me, they are literally funding more creations….and I could not be more thankful and honored! 🙂

I was recently asked (sort of) why different artists prices vary or why pricing in different locations vary? I can’t answer that for everyone but I can give you a little insight into my boat. I have taken careful planning into my business position of a               “consigning artist” at now, 3 locations! Woot woot! For now this is just where I need to be. From a business perspective, I choose carefully where each piece makes sense. For me and for the location. Each location gives me (and my customer) a different opportunity. I try to price with a number of things in mind…my cost, overhead, and other surrounding artists. When I pick furniture to paint, I look for rare pieces but also pieces that fit who I am and what I am inspired to paint. Admittedly I probably pay to much on the pieces I really love, I just believe its worth it! I pass on a lot, and I am ok with waiting to find the perfect piece. On average I spend 4-5 hours per piece sometimes more, in prep, paint and sealer. Hardware, paper and paint …oh my! This is where I play. I often spend up to $40 just on paper… And hardware, it is a weakness, enough said. Obviously I try to save money if I can, and price accordingly when I do so. Having different locations broadens my ability to purchase more and offer a range of price points when given that opportunity. Simply because of how my profit is affected in each location. Each store I consign at or each piece for that matter, has different overhead to come out of my price.Sometimes it’s just worth every penny to make your design come alive. Often times, artists bring home just enough to keep their businesses going. At this point, I’m ok with that…I’m more than ok with that. I am grateful for that! I know people on all ends of this spectrum. I admire them all for everything they do, you find what works for you and make it happen. I respect it, whatever your way might be. I am beyond grateful for all of you taking the time to read this and for your support of local (and not so local) artists. We would not be able to do what we do without you. 🙂
