Before and After–Yellow Cabinet

Two posts in one day… See I’m already keeping my promise. I worked on a little yellow cabinet this week that was such a great find from my good friend. I love doing pieces like this, there isn’t really a wrong color or design.

One of my favorite colors to paint is Mustard and I’ve been out for a couple months. I finally did an order and I was SO excited. I didn’t sand at all or use a bonding agent, I sprayed a thin coat of the Zinsser Shellac again, 2 coats of mustard and sealed with the High Performance Top Coat by General Finishes. Then the inside needed to be painted so I paired it with Persian Blue by General Finishes.

I just bought some sweet knobs and Apron Strings by Miss Mustard Seed for a custom giant buffet….and it’s gonna be awesome! Stay tuned!

Before and After–Driftwood Empire

The last few weeks have been full of summer days with two kiddos and lots and lots of painting. I haven’t been able to highlight each piece on here as much as I want to…but I promise to try harder to make time, especially when school starts! My oldest is starting Kindergarten in less than two weeks. Ekkk. So much anxiety in my house right now! I thought I was ready…but now all the fear is setting in. On the flip side, she is very ready and excited. I can find comfort in that right? Geesh. In the meantime Mike and I have been slowly redoing my sons room. If you follow me on Facebook or Instagram you probably saw this picture.

I had scored not one, but two amazing dressers for my little guys room. I always pictured a blue empire in that space, when I came across one…and then another, I ended up buying both. One was pretty spendy but the other was a steal! It evens out right? Both needed quite a bit of work. In fact the one on the left has a huge crack across the top and it was in 2 pieces. They are more than worth the work though. I ran a pole on Facebook to help me decide which to keep, I was so torn. My original plan was the one on the right, but after seeing them in person (and the help of the facebookers) we decided the one on the left was the one that will fit his space the best. So….I painted the other one Driftwood by Old Fashioned Milk Paint Co. It’s a great neutral that looks really pretty, nice and chippy. I did a light (very light) spray with Zinsser Shellac and didn’t sand at all. I purposely did not get full coverage with the spray shellac because I wanted a really chippy aged look, but I wanted some control. The pictures have a hard time showing it, but if you look closely you can see the pattern of the wood showing through the paint, in the photos it looks like paint color variation but in person it adds so much character to the patina.

 

My talented husband Mike created this “open” sign marquee for a local shop in Tacoma, isn’t it cool? He comes up with some amazing designs, I’m so proud of him. 🙂

A tale of 3 pieces

I have had a very busy last week and a half. I completed five projects, yes five…is that crazy? I planned on writing a separate post about each one as I went along but that didn’t happen. Today I thought I would focus on three of them and I will write another post in a couple of days on the other two. Get ready for lots of photos. So first up, is this sweet dresser. I really love to play with dry brushing and solid coverage. It’s a really easy way to add character or highlight details. I used Antique White by General Finishes, which is honestly my favorite option for white. It has a really great creamy tone and paints like a dream. This was another piece I found at a second hand store with my grandma and left it there because it was to much. The next morning I got a text message from the store (yes I subscribe to the sale texts) saying that furniture was 50% off. I called my grandpa and they ran up to snag it for me since I live pretty far. Lucky gal I am! I love these little highboys…I feel like whichever direction I go, it works.

Ok next up is a piece I drove by on my way to ride the ferry with my family. They are such good sports when I flip a u-turn to look at furniture at any given time. They know I just can’t help it. And I’m so glad I did! Not only was it a steal…but it had a sister dresser to match. In 3 seconds flat I knew I wanted both, but I didn’t have room in the car with the kids or cash on hand. I begged the woman to take my ID as insurance that I would be right back with cash. In retrospect that was a horrible idea. Hindsight is always 20/20, I blame it on a furniture pickin brain.  Please tell me you’ve been there before? After finally getting these ladies home I used Confederate Grey from Maison Blanche with a General Finishes top coat. I ended up painting a sweet bench to match in Bliss by Country Chic Paint.

 

Last but not least is the sister to the vanity which is one of those little highboys I love so much. I used General Finishes Persian Blue on this one. These knobs get me every time. When I first bought them, I bought 22… Which still wasn’t even enough. I love bone knobs in any fashion., they go with any color or style and make such a great statement.  I lined the drawers with wallpaper in a really pretty pattern that matched perfectly. I love this one.

In the next few days I will write another post on the other two I worked on this week (which I think I have before pictures of one of them). I will leave you with what happens behind me when I’m trying to stage pieces. Crazy monkeys.
